Hello Davenport Friends and Neighbours –
I begin this first fall update to share with you a historic moment as I sat in the House of Commons today to witness the address by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to the Canadian people. His words were moving and powerful, and Canada has responded with long-term support plans. You can read the details in the links below.
At home in Davenport for the summer it has been great to join you in the many parades, street festivals and social gatherings.Summer is a special time to meet with you, to listen to you and hear what’s on your mind.
I know that housing, affordability, and mental health are just a few of the topics that have been raised by people across Davenport, and the federal government is responding on multiple fronts:
- By eliminating the GST on new construction of rental apartments, and enacting the Housing Accelerator Fund that will prompt cities to build thousands of new rental units.
- By extending deadlines for the Canada emergency Business Account and flexible loan terms for small businesses and nonprofits.
- By demanding that major grocery chains stabilize their prices by Thanksgiving or stronger measures will be taken.
- By introducing legislation to change the Competition Act
I had the honour of joining the Honourable Francois-Phillippe Champagne, the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, and Toronto’s Mayor Olivia Chow to announce new licence conditions for carrier, for which I have been a lead advocate, so Toronto subway riders will always have access to their mobile networks, particularly in case of emergency.
Our federal government has also introduced a plan to address gaps in equity, diversity and inclusion with Canada’s distress line sector. It is an important complement to the 9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline, which will launch on November 30th.
On Monday the Prime Minister stated in the House that our national security agencies have reason to believe that “agents of the Indian government” carried out the killing of a Canadian citizen. At the same time, our federal government has launched a Public Inquiry into Foreign Interference to address public concerns around alleged Chinese interference into our democracy.
As always, this update is designed as a resource to the community of Davenport about federal government actions and legislation, and I hope you find the MP Report and the links below to be useful and informative.
My best regards,
Julie Dzerowicz
