Olá, and happy Portuguese Heritage Month.

I'm Julie Dzerowicz, Member of Parliament for Davenport, home to the largest Portuguese community in Canada.

Every June, we celebrate a story that began more than seventy years ago. In 1953, the first great wave of Portuguese immigrants arrived at Pier 21 in Halifax. Many came with little more than determination, leaving hardship behind to build a better life.

And build they did. Today, more than half a million Portuguese Canadians lead in every corner of this country, as teachers, business owners, artists, athletes, and builders of community.

So, to the Portuguese Canadian community, thank you. Thank you for all you do to make our communities and our country strong.

This month, I invite everyone to celebrate Portuguese culture, traditions, and contributions to our great country.
