Davenport Friends and Neighbours / Amis et Voisins de Davenport,
Thank you for once again placing your trust in me and electing me for a fourth term as your Member of Parliament. As always I will work hard for you and for all Canadians. Know that you are at the heart of every decision I make.
Our 45th Parliament opened with a Speech from the Throne delivered by His Majesty King Charles III. It was a speech that outlined our federal government’s plan moving forward. After selecting a new House of Commons speaker – Francis Scarpaleggia, our Minister of Finance introduced our first bill in the House that will cut income taxes for 22 million Canadians, cut GST for first time homebuyers and lower GST for homes that are bought between $1 million and $1.5 million.
A budget will be introduced this fall – for two simple reasons.
By July 1 we will eliminate all federal interprovincial trade barriers; and at the end of June, Prime Minister Carney will attend NATO meetings in the Hague to discuss how much Canada will commit to transatlantic security and defence, including how much we are spending to defend ourselves. Both of these will impact federal government expenditures and we need the summer to lock down the numbers.
Other things on our agenda before the summer recess are to fast-track national building projects. We cancelled the capital gains tax hike in the spring, and we’re focused on what we can do now to help support our innovators and businesses.
As Chair of the Canadian NATO Parliamentary Association, I led a delegation to Dayton, Ohio for the NATO Parliamentary Association Spring Session. Three reasons this trip was important: we have to win the war in Ukraine. This is a fight for democracy and a fight for international rules based order; it is a fight we cannot lose. Secondly, we needed to plan on how to create a more resilient NATO, ensuring that it continues to deter war moving forward; and lastly, it was important for Canadians to meet with our colleagues in NATO countries.
As the US continues its tariff attack on Canada (and the world), we are working on how to turn these tariffs into an opportunity of how to support each other, with new economic anchors moving forward. All of our countries need to become more resilient – not just because of the Trump tariffs but because of the major geopolitical changes and technological transformations underway. It was a productive trip.
Turning to the Middle East, Canada joined the UK and France to put out a strong statement on the heart wrenching humanitarian situation in Gaza.
“We strongly oppose the expansion of Israel’s military operations in Gaza. The level of human suffering in Gaza is intolerable. Yesterday’s announcement that Israel will allow a basic quantity of food into Gaza is wholly inadequate. We call on the Israeli Government to stop its military operations in Gaza and immediately allow humanitarian aid to enter Gaza. This must include engaging with the UN to ensure a return to delivery of aid in line with humanitarian principles. We call on Hamas to release immediately the remaining hostages they have so cruelly held since 7 October 2023” Read more.
For those that may not know, the federal government held a three-level police and government Anti-Semitism Forum to coordinate efforts to combat the troubling rise in anti-semtism in Canada. Here is the press release and action items from that meeting.
Much more has to be done. Earlier this week, I raised the issues that the Davenport Jewish community members have spoken to me about with the new Minister of Public Safety and with the Secretary of State for Crime. There will be a lot more action and news in the weeks and months to come.
Locally, I’ve had so much fun celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the building that now houses Alexander Muir Jr & Sr Public School that I spoke about it in the House of Commons!
Thanks to all the Portuguese businesses that stepped up to award scholarships to Portuguese students – at the FCPBP Gala Dinner. Thanks to Matthew Correia and the LIttle Portugal BIA for all they did to launch the Azores Parkette where I was happy to provide a certificate of thanks and appreciation.
We are entering a month filled with street festivals, fun fairs and graduations. I look forward to seeing Davenport residents and friends out in our neighbourhoods. First up is DoWest Fest next Friday and Saturday. I hope to see many of you there.
Davenport, it is a true honour and pleasure to serve you.
My very best regards,
Julie Dzerowicz
