Davenport friends & neighbours,

I’m so sorry that you haven’t heard from me in a while. It is always with great hope that the summer will be slower and that I will have more time to do things when the House isn’t sitting; but alas that is not the case this summer.

As I am always about continuous improvement, this week’s email update has been simplified. Part 1 – what I am doing for you and on your behalf; and Part 2 – Important Federal Government Updates.

Nationally
Our top priority continues to be negotiating a new economic and security agreement with President Trump and strengthening Canada’s internal economy. Our sovereignty is at stake and so is our way of life.  The sky is not falling, but we have to move with haste and decisively.

This means responding to the Trump tariffs and economic impacts; and aggressively moving forward with implementing Bill C-5: One Canada Economy Act –  eliminating interprovincial trade barriers which will facilitate the free movement of people, goods, and services so Canadian businesses can grow and expand, and working with provincial/territorial as well as indigenous leaders to select nation-building projects – which will unite Canadians, create the good paying jobs of today and tomorrow, while honouring our sustainability and emissions targets.

There is extraordinary diversity within Indigenous leadership and communities in Canada so there will never be unanimity on any program or initiative.   Despite this reality, it is important for our government to partner with Indigenous communities across Canada in all of our efforts to keep Canada united and to create a more resilient and stronger Canadian economy.

Another important thing to note is that our Industry Minister and our Trade Minister are working hard to redirect our trade and to solidify new partnerships for Canadian materials.  We have been too dependent on the US for too long; we are pivoting and doing so as quickly as we can.

Our federal government has also initiated prebudget consultations for Fall Federal Budget 2025. Affordability and creating more housing in  Canada continue to be top priorities; as is ensuring we invest more and spend less overall.  I encourage all Davenport residents to share your priorities and your ideas with our Minister of Finance.

Locally

Serving and representing Davenport residents as faithfully and to the best of my ability is always at the heart of everything I do.

This week, I spent four  hours visiting local police stations to get an  update on crime rates and key issues.  It’s a good thing that bail reform is a top priority for our government; “catch and release” is a huge issue and needs to be addressed.   Strengthening the laws federally is critical as is ensuring there is enough staff in provincial courts. I also believe we should make more transparent the decisions made by the Justice of the Peace and Judges in general. I was floored by the professionalism and the hard work of our local police. Crime numbers across the board have significantly reduced – in all key crime categories. The most exciting part is that more police resources continue to come on stream, which will mean more attention on local issues such as hate crimes & vandalism, auto theft, gun activity and open (non-cannabis) drug use.

Dufferin Grove – for the latest, here is my response to the encampments in Dufferin Grove.

It’s been a pleasure to meet with many of you over the last few weeks – from speaking with you on issues related to Metrolinx & the Davenport Diamond, to support for the arts and culture,  to hosting the 8th Annual Canada Summer Jobs BBQ, to attending lots of BBQs including LiUNA Local 183 and Masjid el Noor and so much more. I love saying hello and connecting directly with you!  See below for a more comprehensive list of my meetings and outdoor meet ups.

New park in Toronto!  It’s exciting that we have a new park at the Port Lands – Biidaasige Park .. it is beautiful and while on the other side of the city, I am always thrilled when we manage to add more green space and more places for us to be active and create community.

It is BIG on Bloor this weekend!   Hurrah!  I will be there on Saturday and Sunday during the day and look forward to seeing you! As well, do not forget to head to the PanAmerican Food and Music Festival at Nathan Phillips Square this weekend – over 40 countries showcasing their food and music.  It will be so much fun!

As always, it is a true honour and pleasure to serve you Davenport!

Warm regards,

Julie Dzerowicz
