Davenport friends & neighbours,
Today’s email update will be short, but don’t let that deceive you! So much work is happening “behind the scenes”. The calm before the storm as they say.
Proper wages for the those who serve in the Canadian Armed Forces
Top of mind is the announcement the Prime Minister made earlier today – that $2 billion has been invested in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) which will finally pay the women and men a good wage for serving our country. They are often the hidden heroes who support our communities who are impacted by wildfires and other national disasters. They are saving us from misadventures in the north, rural and coastal parts of our country. They are a strong presence and force in over 3000 communities across Canada. All this in addition to the work they do to support Canadian missions overseas as part of NATO, NORAD, the UN and other international bodies.
I was delighted to hear the news; it will also help with recruitment and retention. If anyone knows of someone who is looking for a career and a way to serve our country, I’d recommend the Canadian Armed Forces.
What next re Trump Tariffs
Our Prime Minister and our team are not stopping; we did not get a deal with Trump on August 1, but know that we are working on multiple fronts at the same time. Here is a list of some of the things I know about:
- PM Carney said the negotiations and conversations with Trump and his team continue. There are also rumours that we will try to move with Mexico to speed up the start of Part III of the NAFTA agreement (aka CUSMA). Stay tuned.
- We are finally paying attention to the Mexicans! The Canadian Minister of Finance and Minister of Foreign Affairs flew to Mexico City to meet with the Mexican President Sheinbaum and business leaders. Apparently it was a productive meeting that is paving the way for both of our countries to strengthen our bilateral trade and to work together on the third version of NAFTA.
- The PM convened a meeting with provincial and territorial leaders to work on next steps to the U.S. tariffs:
- They agreed to accelerate efforts to mobilize capital and investment, diversify supply chains, and strengthen domestic production capacity.
- They unanimously committed to encouraging Canadian businesses to prioritize and leverage Canadian expertise, where possible, to help alleviate the short-term economic impacts of U.S. tariffs, reduce dependence on vulnerable trade flows, and build Canada’s long-term economic resilience.
- The PM also announced new measures to support the softwood lumber industry:
- Investing $500 million to supercharge product and market diversification
- Providing up to $700 million in loan guarantees to address the immediate pressures facing the softwood lumber sector
- Prioritizing Canadian materials in construction and changing federal procurement processes to require companies contracting with the federal government to source Canadian lumber
- Launching a new initiative to diversify exports of Canadian wood products, including the reinvigoration of federal programming to expand offshore markets for sustainable, innovative, high-quality products
- Providing $50 million for upskilling, reskilling, and income supports for more than 6,000 affected softwood lumber workers through the Labour Market Development Agreements.
Humanitarian efforts in Gaza
Several Davenport residents have written to me about continued concerns about federal government participation in sending arms to Israel. The Minister of Foreign Affairs was unequivocal – Canada is not doing so, and we cancelled all export permits in early 2024. If there are Canadian companies ignoring the law – the Minister has indicated they will face consequences.
Canada has now dropped critical humanitarian aid supplies into Gaza via our own aircraft to help Palestinians who are facing starvation and cannot get access to supplies on the ground. The CAF was able to drop almost 10,000 kilograms of aid into Gaza.
Of course this is not the ideal way to give food to the Palestinians in Gaza – but desperate times call for desperate measures, and we believe we need to do all we can to get food to where it is needed the most. Of course, we continue to push with all our might, power and everything we can to get the 600 trucks of humanitarian aid that need to get into the country now. Netanyahu has a different plan, but we cannot stop our efforts.
Support for Seniors
Keeping our seniors active and healthy is so important! New Horizons for Seniors Program is accepting applications for 2025-26! This federal grant funds projects designed by seniors, for seniors, that help support healthy aging, prevent senior abuse, and celebrate diversity, independence, and inclusion among seniors. Successful applicants could get up to $25,000 for a project! Apply online here.
Federal Budget 2025: this is a budget like no other
We want to spend less, invest more, we want to redirect our trade away from the US, we want to strengthen Canada’s internal trade and economy using Canadian materials and products. With this in mind give your input on the Federal Budget 2025. Share your suggestions by email to: yourbudget-votrebudget@fin.gc.ca, or online at Canada.ca/YourBudget.
We are moving fast, Davenport friends and neighbours!! So, please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or if there is anything you are curious about.
As always, it is a true honour and pleasure to serve you Davenport! Have a great weekend!
With gratitude and warm regards,
Julie Dzerowicz
