Davenport friends & neighbours,
The summer days are literally melting away and it is going all too quickly.
My constituency office is going on a summer break and only limited services will be available these last two weeks of August.
All immigration cases outside of immediate emergencies will be responded to the week of Sept 2. And all correspondence received between Aug 16 and Aug 30 will be read but not responded to. Kindly call my office if there is something you need a response to and / or send a new email in September.
Air Canada strike action. What is top of mind this week is the 72-hour strike notice that CUPE the Air Canada union has served to Air Canada; it has caused great consternation to many who are on vacation or are going.
Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu is the lead for the federal government on this file and has stated that the best course of action is for the flight attendants (CUPE) and management at Air Canada to come to a negotiated bilateral agreement. This reflects my position. Nobody can come up with a better deal than one that is reached by the two parties involved. Air Canada has asked for binding arbitration and that has been refused by CUPE. To stay up to date on our statements, please click here.
Standing with Ukraine. Prime Minister Carney called President Zelenskyy this week to continue to express our unequivocal support for Ukraine. While President Trump meets with President Putin, Canada believes there can be no peace deal or any decisions about Ukraine without Ukraine at the table.
Canada and all defenders of democracy and a rules-based international order cannot allow an autocratic government to invade a democratic country (or any country), take over pieces that it wants without retribution. And they simply must not be allowed to win. International rules based order must be followed. Without these rules, might is right, there will be chaos and a greater expense to each independent country to protect its borders and defend their country. Ukraine must win and we must continue to support the brave women and men who are fighting for their democracy and the right to determine their own future.
100 days in office. August 6 was our Prime Minister Carney’s 100th day in office. We have done a lot and are moving quickly. I am crafting an old-fashioned communications piece that will be delivered by Canada Post and should reach your doors by mid September to highlight what we have achieved. We introduced four bills and are moving fast on to implement what we promised in our election platform.
Federal Budget 2025 will be introduced this fall. If you want to contribute ideas, please do so prior to August 28. Remember we are investing more and spending less – which programs do we keep? How can we attract more investments nationally and internationally? What can the government do that will not cost any money but will help Canadians? Here is the link to contribute.
As Chair of Toronto Caucus, I met with Mayor Chow this week. Top of mind for us is housing, infrastructure and public safety. The federal government over the last 10 years has provided a historic amount of investment in the City for transit, infrastructure and housing. For us to ensure that the City remains the economic and cultural capital of the country, it’s important for us to continue to have a strong city / federal relationship.
While the Davenport Overpass is not a federal matter, I care about the community benefits of this project and have been a passionate proponent of ensuring the Davenport constituency is better off because of the regional transit running through our riding. I have heard grumblings from the community on this file, so I managed to track down the Vice President of Community Engagement for Toronto. I have passed along the contact details to community leaders. I will continue to follow this file and help in whatever way possible.
This is the last email update until September 19 unless the world falls apart and I need to be in touch sooner.
Enjoy the rest of the summer, keep safe and take care of each other.
As always, it is a true honour and pleasure to serve you Davenport! Have a great weekend!
With gratitude and warm regards,
Julie Dzerowicz
