Dear Davenport Neighbours,

It has been a wonderful week in the riding during March Break. I love being out in Davenport, and this week was packed with great community moments.

I met with the Canadian-Cuba Friendship Alliance, gave opening remarks at the NEXT Awards at Ubisoft, and visited the Jeff Wall exhibit at MOCA Toronto with Parliamentary Secretary David Myles.

I also stopped by Casa das Beiras and Martin’s Churrasqueira over the weekend to say hello to new and old friends. And this morning, I was honoured to wish Eid Mubarak to our Muslim neighbours at both Masjid El Noor and the Dawah Centre. Eid Mubarak to all those celebrating!

A World in Turmoil

I know many of you are feeling anxious about the state of the world right now. The U.S.–Israeli war in Iran, rising energy costs, and global instability—it can feel surreal. As Prime Minister Carney has emphasized this week: Canada’s economy is dealing with a lot. And now, we face more volatility. I want you to know that your government is focused, clear-eyed, and working to protect Canadians.

Canada’s Position on Iran & Energy Costs

Let me be clear: Canada is not joining the U.S.–Israeli military campaign. Defence Minister McGuinty has been unequivocal that Canada has no intention of participating in offensive operations and is pushing for de-escalation.

What Canada is doing is working with partners to address the real cost-of-living impact of this conflict. Yesterday, Canada joined the U.K., France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Japan in a joint statement calling on Iran to stop blocking the Strait of Hormuz—through which roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply normally flows. Together, these nations expressed a readiness to contribute to efforts to safely reopen the strait and get energy moving again, because the blockage is driving up prices for families everywhere.

The Bank of Canada held its interest rate steady this week at 2.25%, noting that February inflation fell to 1.8%. Governor Macklem acknowledged that higher oil prices will push inflation up in the short term, but stressed it is too early to assess the full impact. The Bank has committed to ensuring energy price spikes do not turn into persistent, broad-based inflation.

In the meantime, federal affordability supports remain in place: the Groceries and Essentials Benefit provides up to $1,890 this year for a family of four (replacing the GST/HST credit), alongside the Canada Child Benefit, and the Canadian Dental Care Plan. Canada’s position as an energy-producing nation gives us more resilience than many countries—but we know rising prices still hurt, and we are working every day to ease that burden.

Keeping Canadians Safe: Bill C-22 & Public Safety

This week, I joined Minister of Public Safety Gary Anandasangaree and the Chief of Police Demkiw to announce Bill C‑22, the Lawful Access Act. Canada is the only G7 country—and the only Five Eyes nation—without modern lawful access tools for police and CSIS.

Bill C‑22 changes that. It gives investigators faster, court-authorized tools to obtain basic subscriber information from phone and internet providers, helping them fight digital crimes like human trafficking, child exploitation, sextortion, and terrorism. Importantly, all access requires judicial authorization—privacy protections remain strong.

Bill C‑22 is part of a broader sweep of public safety legislation our government has introduced, which has been  developed in consultation with police at all levels and key stakeholders.

See more about Bill C-22 here.

This includes Bill C‑14 (tougher bail and sentencing for repeat violent offenders), Bill C‑9 (new offences targeting hate crimes and intimidation near religious sites), and Bill C‑16 (criminalizing coercive control and classifying femicide as first-degree murder). These bills respond directly to what law enforcement has been asking for to keep our communities safe.

On a final note, today is the first day of spring which is a time of renewal and hope; while it still feels like winter out there, I hope you get a chance to get out and visit the many parts of our amazing downtown west community!

Have a great weekend; as always, It is a true honour and pleasure to serve you, Davenport!

My best regards,

Julie Dzerowicz
