Davenport friends & neighbours,
This week will go down as a historic week in Canadian history. Two major events to focus on in this week’s update.
Trump increases tariffs on Canada from 25% to 35%
Last night, President Trump signed an executive order putting 35% tariffs on Canadian imports into the United States. It’s important for everyone to be reminded that this is only on products that are not Canada-US-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) compliant. Around 90% of Canadian exports to the U.S. fall under CUSMA, which means they are exempt from this tariff increase.
What you need to know:
- This impacts primarily the steel, aluminum, automobile and lumber sectors.
- 10% seems like a small number, but it will be a huge hit to these sectors.
- Remember that it will be American companies and citizens that will be paying a higher price for Canadian steel, aluminum, automobiles and lumber.
- The majority of Americans do not agree with these tariffs.
- Most US companies are mostly absorbing the costs for now and passing limited cost increases to Americans. This is unsustainable for companies, for US consumers and for their economy. Note that Canada supplies 20% of all steel imports to the US and 50% of all aluminum imports.
So what do we do now? Canada’s plan.
- We continue to negotiate. This is an unprecedented trade crisis with the U.S., but our federal government will take the time necessary to get the best deal for Canada and for our workers.
- We continue to diversify our trade away from the U.S. According to Statistics Canada trade data (July 2025), our trade to the U.S. was a monthly average of 76% in 2024, but now it is 68%.
- Strengthen Canada’s internal economy by continuing to reduce interprovincial trade barriers, decide on and invest in nation-building projects. We need to be more resilient, and we need our economy to be more independent too.
- Targeted support for workers and sectors impacted.
- Keep Canada united. Together, we can give ourselves far more than Trump can take away. Thanks to everyone for supporting Canadian products; supporting Canadian businesses; and for showing your pride for our country.
My thoughts. The increase in tariffs is worrisome, and I wonder whether this is part of President Trump’s strategy all along. He is trying to weaken our economy. He does want Canada to be the 51st state.
And what I want to remind everyone is – we have the best person in our Prime Minister to lead these negotiations, and I have 100% confidence in him and our team. We didn’t ask for this fight and have no doubt, Canada will never, ever, in any shape or form be part of the United States.
Canada to recognise the state of Palestine
Canada’s longstanding position has been to support a two-state solution to achieve long-lasting peace in the Middle East; this means “an independent, viable and sovereign Palestinian state living side by side with the state of Israel in peace and security.
Due to a number of events and actions, the prospects for a two-state have been steadily eroding. As a result, Prime Minister Carney announced Canada’s intention is to recognize the State of Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly this fall.
Canada’s intention is dependant on the Palestinian Authority’s commitment to the following:
- To engage in much needed reforms including reforming its governance.
- To hold general elections in 2026, in which Hamas plays no role;
- To completely demilitarize the Palestinian State.
To support these efforts Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand announced that Canada is providing an additional $30 million in funding dollars to help address humanitarian needs in Gaza, and an additional $10 million to support strengthening the Palestinian Authority’s governance and capacity.
With these additional dollars, Canada has contributed $355 million to meet the humanitarian needs of Palestinians in Gaza since October 7, 2023 – making Canada one of the top three donors to Palestinians.
Responding to Davenport concerns regarding Gaza & Palestine
I want to address some of the calls and emails I have been receiving regarding recognising Palestine as a state and the unforgivable humanitarian crisis in Gaza. It is truly a heartbreaking situation, and my opinion is that it has taken too long for global leaders to unite to act. But we are acting, and I hope the war will soon end and there is a path to peace established.
- I am happy our Prime Minister has declared our intention; it is consistent with our long-standing belief and commitment to a two state solution, and our intention relies on the Palestinian authorities to follow through on its commitments as outlined above.
- We are one of the top global funders of humanitarian aid (waiting at the border to get in!) and we have also, with Jordan’s help, started drops of food in Gaza.
- Over 2000 Palestinian Canadians, PRs and extended families have been supported to leave Gaza (with full security screening and other immigration screens completed). Canada is one of only very few countries to do this.
- As for an arms embargo, Foreign Minister Anita Anand has addressed the CBC report. Canada is not sending arms to Israel; we have canceled all export permits for lethal weapons. If there is a Canadian company that is exporting, they will be held accountable if they are violating Canadian law.
Anti-Semitic Vandalism in Davenport
There have been recent antisemitic vandalism and acts in our constituency of Davenport. The rapid and sustained increase of anti-semitism is troubling. Antisemitism is completely unacceptable whether in the riding, in the city, in the country or anywhere in the world. It is also important to state that the actions of Netanyahu and key members of his Israel cabinet should not be attributed to anyone who is a part of the Jewish community in Canada. It is important that each one of us plays a role in fighting antisemitism, in calling it out, in telling people it is unacceptable, and doing this every single day and every single time we see any evidence of it.
This weekend marks the beginning of a long weekend. Hurrah! Have a safe and fun long weekend.
As always, it is a true honour and pleasure to serve you Davenport!
Warm regards,
Julie Dzerowicz
