Davenport Friends and Neighbours / Amis et Voisins de Davenport,
I love the holiday season! LOVE the caroling, the lights, the music, the old and new movies, and taking time for friends and family.
BUT it also can be an expensive time of year and so, as of tomorrow the federal government will be offering a temporary GST/HST tax break on most food items, beverages, restaurants, catering, children’s clothing and toys, books, video games, and more! Every dollar saved is helpful to individuals and families who are struggling to make ends meet this winter season.

Davenport small business, there is also great news for you! The refund on a portion of the carbon tax paid over the last few years will be refunded. Deposits are currently underway directly into small business bank accounts. The Canada Carbon Rebate for Small Business will provide a holiday bonus anywhere from thousands of dollars to hundreds of thousands of dollars depending on how many employees you have!
Canada Post Hot off the presses! Labour Minister Steve MacKinnon today announced that he “… will direct the Canada Industrial Relations Board to assess the parties reaching negotiated agreements by December 31, 2024 …” If the CIRB says Canada Post and the union are unlikely to reach an agreement by year end, then the current collective agreements will stand and both must resume operations until May 22, 2025.

Report from the Hill
Canada-US Relations. Earlier this week, PM Trudeau hosted the second virtual meeting with all the Premiers & Territorial leaders. to discuss a strategy for a Canadian approach to responding to the 25% tariff threat – indicating that all agreed to a strong Team Canada approach. My bet also is that there will be some funding for the border and other measures to address issues raised by President-elect Trump in the Fall Economic Statement to be released on Monday December 16, 2024.

Other important federal updates in the Links section at the bottom of this email report include changes to the Group of Five sponsorship; prohibition in Canada of 324 additional makes and models of assault style firearms; more support for Canadians to build secondary suites to ensure affordable housing in our cities; and other important federal initiatives.
Happenings in the amazing constituency of Davenport
There has been no shortage of community events, so when I home from Ottawa I take every opportunity to connect with Davenport residents: loved attending Regal Heights Residents Association’s Holiday Pub Night, enjoyed a magical evening at the Pia Bouman School of Dance’s incredible performance of The Nutcracker; visited tons of local holiday markets including at Perth Junior School and MakerBean; spoke leadership and civics with over 100 students at Oakwood Collegiate; attended the Fairback Village Holiday Party; hosted Labour and Seniors Minister Steven MacKinnon at First Portuguese, and oh so much more! Follow me on Instagram if you wish to.
MY PARTY. Of course the biggest and best Holiday Party of the season is THIS SATURDAY December 14 between 2pm and 4pm at the Dufferin Grove Clubhouse at Dufferin Grove Park (across the street from Dufferin Mall and one block south of Dufferin Station ). Yup. Rudolph is preparing to lead the troops and our extra special guest to visit as well. 😂
Have a great weekend, Davenport! As always, it is a true honour and pleasure to serve you.
My very best regards,
Julie Dzerowicz
