Davenport friends & neighbours:

Hot off the presses!  FIFA 2026 groups have been determined. Canada will be facing  Qatar, Switzerland and the  winner of the European playoff.  The US will be facing Australia, Paraguay, and the winner of the UEFA playoff.  And Mexico will be facing South Korea, South Africa and the UEFA playoff winner.  I am liking Canada’s chances. Good picks PM Carney!

Jobs. Yes!  In November Canada added 54,000 jobs – more youth are being hired, most of the job gains are in the health care and social services, accommodation, food services and natural resources. It’s great news given the incredible uncertainty globally and in the economy.  CANADA SUMMER JOBS applications are now open.  If you are an organisation or business and want federal government funding to hire students in 2026 – apply here!

On Parliament Hill.  The top issue that has dominated our discussions has been the MOU signed between Canada and Alberta.   After much discussion with my colleagues including the Prime Minister – I am confident that our federal government remains fully committed to achieving our climate targets and to urgently moving Canada  to a low carbon future.  Because the world has so fundamentally changed, our approach has had to change as well.  The MOU is a plan to a plan – there are a lot of hurdles to Alberta being able to move forward on a new pipeline. And there are additional commitments by Alberta to a higher industrial carbon pricing, methane emissions targets and  investments in carbon capture (pathways). Canada is a federation, no new project will move forward without in this case, BC support and substantive indigenous support including coastal first nations.

Games.  Lots of games are being played on parliamentary committees.  I wont bore you with the inside baseball tactics but the games are holding up important legislation on bail reform, tackling harassment, and other key public safety measures.  This part of what is happening in the House is not seen by the public – but the result is a government not able to move important legislation forward.

Affordability. I spoke in favour of Bill C-4 (Making Life More Affordable for Canadians Act) which if passed will provide three measures we already announced (lower taxes, eliminate GST for first time homebuyers, eliminate consumer carbon pricing). The measures will reduce costs for Canadians and make life more affordable.

We will continue to support Ukraine;  our Minister of Foreign Affairs invested $200 million in Ukraine, joining other European nations, to ensure Ukraine has the capabilities it needs to win this longstanding unprovoked and illegal war against Russia.

Canada also signed an agreement to join the EU in Security Action for Europe (SAFE), which will help deliver on defence capability targets more quickly and economically. The EU has invested €150 billion, in which Canada will be able to acquire critical capabilities such as ammunition, missiles, drones, artillery systems, and infantry weapons. In a more divided and dangerous world, this is part of our plan to join with a broader range of trusted partners to protect our sovereignty and our democracy.

It’s December! And you know that that means … the annual Davenport Holiday Party.  It will take place on Saturday December 13 – 1pm to 4pm at Dufferin Grove Clubhouse next to the skating rink, across from Dufferin Mall, 2 blocks south of Dufferin Station!  And yes our jolly friend from the North Pole will be there!  Please mark it off in your calendar and RSVP here.

Have a great weekend Davenport.  It’s a true honour and pleasure to serve you.

With gratitude and warm regards,Julie Dzerowicz
