Dear Davenport friends and neighbours, / Chers amis et voisins de Davenport,
MP Dzerowicz has just arrived from Washington D.C. today. After a long couple of weeks filled with hard work all around the world (Brussels & Paris for the NATO Parliamentary Assembly), she will not be able to make it for this week’s newsletter! So, we, her staff, will be providing you with the latest updates for the week.
Update on the Middle East: Iran, Israel, and the U.S.
We have been receiving calls in the office on the current situation in the Middle East, and specifically our Prime Minister’s response. Many constituents have stated that our position isn’t very clear, and MP Dzerowicz believes that this is furthest from the truth.
Canada has been clear from the beginning: the Islamic Republic of Iran is the principal source of instability and terror throughout the Middle East, has one of the world’s worst human rights records, and must never be allowed to obtain or develop nuclear weapons. Our government has historically said this, and we continue to communicate the same message today.
Conveying PM Carney’s statement: We take this position with regret, because the current conflict is another example of the failure of the international order. Despite decades of United Nations Security Council resolutions, the tireless work of the International Atomic Energy Agency, and a succession of sanctions and diplomatic frameworks, Iran’s nuclear threat remains. And now the United States and Israel have acted without engaging the United Nations or consulting with allies, including Canada.
Diplomatic engagement is essential to avoid a wider and deeper conflict. Innocent civilians must be protected, and all parties must commit to finding enduring agreements to end both nuclear proliferation and terrorist extremism. This is our focus.
Our highest priority remains protecting Canadians who are currently in the Middle East. Under our Standing Rapid Deployment Team plan, we have deployed extra consular support to the surrounding region to help Canadians across the region including in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Israel, Jordan, Turkmenistan and Türkiye.
Canadians should continue to register with the Registration of Canadians Abroad to continue to get up to date information and can contact the 24/7 Emergency Watch and Response Centre at +1-613-996-8885 or me-mo.sos@international.gc.ca.
