Hello Davenport friends and neighbours! / Bonjour chers amis et voisins de Davenport!
This week brought some important moments in Ottawa — from generational changes for more unity to critical legislation that will strengthen our healthcare system and keep our communities safe. Let me share what’s been happening and what it means for you.
This isn’t the time for political games or slogans.
This week, we unveiled the official portrait of former Prime Minister Stephen Harper in Parliament. At the ceremony, Harper reminded us all of something essential: “We must make any sacrifice necessary to preserve the independence and the unity of this blessed land.”
These words from a respected Conservative elder statesman couldn’t be more timely. With threats to our sovereignty from the US and separatist movements at home, this was a clarion call — country first, party second.
It’s time for action. It’s time to stand united for the betterment of our nation and all Canadians. That’s the message to federal Conservatives, to the Alberta separatist movement, and to anyone looking to fuel division in our country. Right now, we need to work together to pass the Budget Implementation Act, so we can start making the generational changes that our country needs.
Building a Smarter Healthcare System
This week I was excited to see that our federal government has introduced Bill S-5, the Connected Care for Canadians Act — legislation I’ve been advocating for with the Health Minister. This is about bringing our healthcare system into the 21st century.
Right now, only 29% of primary care providers can share patient information electronically outside their practice. Doctors still use fax machines. So many Canadians are still carrying around paper copies of health records. That’s unacceptable when other sectors went fully digital decades ago.
Bill S-5 will require all digital health IT companies in Canada to adopt common standards so your information can be shared securely between providers. This means better care for all of us, less administrative burden for our healthcare workers, and a system ready to benefit from AI innovations that improve patient outcomes. Medical records will remain secure and protected — for only your use and your healthcare providers’ use.
We have a great public healthcare system. We have more than enough funding. We just need to make the right investments and the right decisions to keep it strong for the future.
Upcoming By-Elections
With the departures of Chrystia Freeland and Bill Blair from federal politics, two by-elections will be held in Toronto ridings. Dr. Danielle Martin will be the Liberal candidate in University-Rosedale, and Doly Begum, currently an Ontario NDP MPP, will be the Liberal candidate in Scarborough Southwest. Both ridings will also have Conservative and NDP candidates – more information will be available as candidates are confirmed.
Transforming Canada’s Auto Industry
Prime Minister Carney announced a comprehensive new auto strategy this week that will transform our industry to be less reliant not only on gas-powered vehicles, but also the U.S. This strategy invests $3 billion to help our auto sector adapt and grow, while meeting our climate commitments through stronger greenhouse gas emission standards — targeting 75% EV sales by 2035 and 90% by 2040.

The strategy includes:
$2.3 billion EV Affordability Program offering incentives up to $5,000 for battery electric vehicles
$1.5 billion for charging infrastructure across Canada
Support for up to 66,000 workers including displaced auto workers.
We are positioning Canada to become a global leader in electric vehicle production while reducing emissions and creating good jobs right here at home.
Supporting Fact-Based Canadian Journalism
The Washington Post’s recent challenges remind us why supporting Canadian journalism matters. I’m a major champion of fact-based Canadian journalism and have been advocating that 25% of federal advertising dollars should go to traditional and digital Canadian journalism outlets, credible ethnic media, and radio stations. We need to continue funding the CBC and ensuring local news and reporting across our country.
In the meantime, with so much disinformation online, it’s more important than ever to know and trust your media sources and to seek out multiple sources. The Government of Canada has fact-checking resources available to help you navigate what’s real and what’s not.

Keeping Our Communities Safe
We need to urgently pass critical public safety legislation – The Bail and Sentencing Reform Act (Bill C-14), Protecting Victims Act (Bill C-9), and Combatting Hate Act (Bill C-16).
Earlier this week, the Prime Minister met with Canada’s Big City Mayors’ Caucus, and they were unanimous: Parliament needs to pass the Bail and Sentencing Reform Act (Bill C-14) to strengthen the Criminal Code and keep violent and repeat offenders off our streets. Our police chiefs are calling for it. Our mayors are calling for it. Now we need all parties to come together and pass it.
Canada’s Position on Iran
The Minister of Foreign Affairs released statements this week addressing serious concerns about Iran. Following U.S. airstrikes and Israeli strikes on Iran, Minister Anand called for de-escalation and warned against a broader regional conflict. Canada is also concerned about reports of Iranian terrorist cells operating in Canada and continues to monitor the situation closely while working with allies to ensure the safety and security of Canadians.

And good news Davenport, get ready for a (predicted) early spring — thanks to the groundhog! Not sure about you, but I know I have been feeling cold lately, so I am very excited by this news. In the meantime: stay warm, stay safe, and have a wonderful weekend, Davenport!
As always, it’s a true pleasure and honour to serve you.
Warmly,
JulieJulie Dzerowicz
