During the 43rd Parliament, in February 2021, MP Dzerowicz introduced a private members bill in the House of Commons that would enable a national strategy for a guaranteed basic income (GBI) in Canada. This is the first time a bill has been introduced in the House of Commons on guaranteed basic income.
The objective of Bill C-273 was to provide an enabling framework for implementation pilots of basic income to be created between provinces, territories, Indigenous governments, and the federal government. Bill C-273 was focused on enabling the capacity to frame, test and validate different models of implementation to get to those answers and that data.
The federal government called an election on September 20, 2021, and the 43rd Parliament was dissolved. This meant that all the processes on private members bills were stopped and have to be completely restarted in the new 44th Parliament that started on November 22, 2023.
MP Dzerowicz continues to firmly believe in GBI, and is currently working with stakeholders across the country to determine the next steps in introducing the new GBI bill.
