- NEWS AND UPDATES
Davenport Friends and Neighbours / Amis et Voisins de Davenport,
Happy New Year! Yes it is the LAST day of January but it’s my first (and last) chance to say this — so I am saying it! 😃
I took a little vacation, which was wonderful, and yet I am so happy to be back! I missed you all.
I want to start with good news and hope — an amazing group of local Portuguese women — Amigas da Toronto — whose event I attended last weekend — has raised $1.1 million dollars for breast cancer research. They are beautiful, inspiring, effective … and so much fun!
During this hectic period with so much going on, I wanted to start with some good news but I know, I know … that the number one thing that is top of mind for most Davenport constituents is not the Liberal leadership race, it is not the Ontario provincial election that is underway, or the good, amazing hopeful things happening in our community … it is the threats, the statements, the actions of President Trump 2.0. Most of us do not want to admit that we are worried, but we are.
Will there be 25% tariffs on Canadian goods going into the USA starting this Saturday? Will it really mean 500,000 jobs lost in Ontario alone? What will it mean for you? For your family? For our collective future?
Well, I am worried too. But I am here to say the following:
Do not panic. Prime Minister Trudeau, while he has resigned, remains fully in charge until a new Liberal leader is selected on March 9. Whatever you think of our Prime Minister, there is no question of his love and loyalty to this country. He is working ferociously with provincial and territorial leaders, as well as business leaders, to both proactively and reactively respond to any USA actions against Canada and Canadians.
We are stronger than we think. Transport Minister and Internal Trade Minister Anand has also assembled (today) her counterparts across the country to work on dropping interprovincial trade barriers and regulations that stop the easy flow of goods and people across our country and stop businesses from expanding.
Doing business has been too easy with the USA for too long, we neglected our own economy. We have everything we need to succeed — water, land, agriculture, energy, minerals, resources, people — with hard work and will we can create a more resilient economy.

This is not to say it will all be easy or there will not be a lot of pain. The world is going through a huge transition, in addition to President Trump being in office and at a time when we have not done enough to ensure that Canadians can access independent fact based journalism and information. One really needs to read and watch multiple credible sources to know what is going on.
So hold on to your hats. In the coming days and weeks, there will be more to say and do. We will all be asked to step up and do our part. I don’t know what the 21st century version is of “…ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country”. But this is where I think we are at. Oh … and I want to see you!! All of you … as much as possible. So with my team, I will be hosting a series of roundtables and coffee chats over the next two months so that we can connect directly!
Before I get to this week’s highlights, I hope you have seen my latest mailed newsletter giving you a great summary of what has been Delivered for Davenport.
As always, it is a true honour and pleasure to serve you.
My very best regards,
Julie Dzerowicz
