Hello Davenport friends and neighbours! / Bonjour chers amis et voisins de Davenport!
There’s a particular feeling to Davenport as I walk around.
Patios lively, neighbours back out on their porches, the first festivals spilling onto the sidewalks, the whole neighbourhood remembering how good it is to be together. It’s the part of this job I never take for granted: everything I work on in Ottawa is, in the end, in service of the communities that come alive on streets like ours. Here’s what that work looked like this week.
A national AI strategy, on Canadian terms
This week, Prime Minister Carney and Minister Evan Solomon launched AI for All, Canada’s new national strategy to make sure artificial intelligence strengthens our economy and protects Canadians, guided by trust, opportunity, and Canadian sovereignty.
Two pieces matter most for families. First, free national AI literacy training and up to 90,000 job placements to help young and early-career Canadians find their footing. Second, stronger protections for your privacy, your kids, and our democracy, including new measures to address deepfakes. Read more about AI for All →
Billy Bishop
This is one of the most important issues facing our riding and all of Toronto, and I know many of you have questions.
I’ve written a full, detailed letter laying out exactly where I stand, what the recent Ontario legislation does and doesn’t do, and the five standards I’ll judge any proposal against, because you deserve the complete picture, not a soundbite. Read my full letter on Billy Bishop → Also, stay tuned a great announcement will be made next week on this topic!
Making Life More Affordable
Affordability stays top of mind for our federal government; we know life is expensive and we are stepping up with support for Canadians.
Three things this week speak to it directly:
Your streaming bill. A recent CRTC decision would have made streaming more expensive. We’ve asked the CRTC to review it, and in the meantime we’re providing $600 million to support Canadian broadcasters and journalists, keeping your bills down without shortchanging Canadian content and news. Groceries. Starting today, a one-time top-up, a 50% boost to the GST Credit, begins landing for the 12 million Canadians who received the credit in January 2026. It’s automatic; there’s nothing to apply for. And it’s the start of something lasting: in July, the new Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit replaces the GST Credit with payments 25% higher for the next five years, up to $1,890 a year for a family of four and $950 for a single person. Fuel. The federal fuel excise tax is suspended from April 20 to September 7, roughly 10¢/litre off gasoline and 4¢ off diesel (and aviation fuel too), real savings for summer driving and road trips. Read more →
Standing up for Canada on Trade
With the CUSMA review arriving July 1, Canada has formally notified the U.S. and Mexico that we want the agreement reviewed. Minister LeBlanc and chief negotiator Janice Charette were in Washington this week to make our case. The Prime Minister has been clear that we’ll stay focused and pragmatic with the U.S. administration, our largest trading and security partner, rather than react to every provocation. Read more →
A Safer, Stronger Community
Many of you have told me how much it matters to feel safe in your community and your city. This week the Prime Minister spoke at Holy Blossom Temple and launched a new Ministerial Advisory Council on Rights, Equality, and Inclusion focused on combatting antisemitism, alongside $75 million in additional funding through the Canada Community Security Program.
This council grew directly out of feedback from the Jewish community, and I want to thank the members of Davenport’s Jewish community who shared their voices and helped shape it. Read more →
Also from Ottawa this week (read more in the links section below):
- A new Strong Transit Fund to help build affordable public transit, with a focus on Canadian suppliers and good Canadian jobs.
- Canada and Ontario opened applications for a new Development Charge Reduction Program to lower the cost of building homes.
- On the economy: the PM acknowledged real softness in recent GDP numbers while making the case that the foundations for a stronger, more independent economy are settling into place, a view the OECD echoed this week, projecting a rebound through 2026 and 2027. Including 88,000 new jobs in May.
- For our seniors’ organizations: the New Horizons for Seniors Program is now accepting proposals, with applications due July 14.
Come say HELLO!
It’s the first festival of the season. DoWest is on, and I’d love to see you: I’ll be on Dundas St tonight from 6–8 pm and tomorrow from 11 am–3 pm.
It’s also the start of Portuguese Heritage Month, a celebration woven right through the heart of Davenport, and I hope you’ll join the Portugal Day Parade next weekend, June 13. Details
As always, it is a true honour and pleasure to serve you.
My best regards,
MP Julie Dzerowicz
