Davenport Friends and Neighbours / Amis et Voisins de Davenport,
What a historic day! Prime Minister Justin Trudeau officially resigned this morning, and Mark Carney is now the Prime Minister of Canada. A new cabinet was also appointed. It’s been slimmed down to 23 Ministers, with a strong team focused on strengthening Canada’s economy, bringing security and defence to the forefront, building Canada’s resiliency, and strengthening partnerships with European, Asian, and other countries.
Federal Ministers Champagne and LeBlanc, with Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Canada’s Ambassador to the U.S. Kirsten Hillman met with US Commerce Secretary Lutnick, and they expressed that the meeting was very constructive. For a full summary of the meeting with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, as well as a summary of Prime Minister Carney’s response to U.S. tariffs, scroll down to the “News and updates” section.
Among the last acts of Prime Minister Trudeau was announcing an additional $37B for childcare spaces, more funding for childcare workers in order to strengthen the national childcare plan. He also announced that all 13 provinces and territories have now signed on to the National School Food Program. Davenport residents and families will greatly benefit from both of these programs.
This week, I focused on communications. Housing continues to be a top-of-mind issue for most communities across our constituency, so I was happy to provide an update to Dufferin Grove residents regarding encampment funding and housing.
I also put out a series of press releases: one to announce federal funding for seniors programming, and a second to announce $10M in additional funding to Davenport organizations and priorities over the last 6 months.
Coming soon to your mailboxes are a Householder, “Canada – Strong and Free”, and a two-pager on supporting the CBC and defending our democracy.
On the foreign affairs front, two key announcements to bring to your attention are the joint statement from Minister Joly & Minister Hussen on the violence that has erupted in Syria over the past week. The second is former International Development Minister Hussen announcing more funding for vaccines globally – while Trump is cutting USAID, Canada is stepping up to provide even more funding on vaccines and global health.
I want to echo the Prime Minister’s wishes for a happy Purim to the Jewish community – Chag Purim Sameach!
As always, it is a true honour and pleasure to serve you.
My very best regards,
Julie Dzerowicz
