Hello Davenport friends and neighbours!
The Federal Budget 2024 continues to be top of mind for Davenport residents, as reflected by the calls and emails we received this week.
Thank you to everyone who joined the virtual Davenport Federal Budget Town Hall. We covered a lot in one hour! There were a few questions that I did not have answers for and promised to provide in this bi-weekly update. See the special section below for the responses.
Climate action is top of mind for us at the federal level and I know it is a top priority for Davenport residents. We released the National Inventory Report that shows that Canada remains on track to meet our emissions reduction goal by 2026, and on track for our 2030 goal. Our Environment Climate Change Minister Guilbeault hosted 175 countries in Ottawa to chart a roadmap to end global plastic pollution. Canada also announced the creation of a federal plastics registry as part of our efforts towards a zero plastic world.
May 3 was the 75th Anniversary of Canada of Canada NATO. Top of mind for NATO members are foreign interference and disinformation. The Canadian National Foreign Interference Inquiry put out its initial report today.
In the House of Commons, the federal Conservatives were focused on asking questions about a possible pilot to legalise small amounts of drugs in the City of Toronto. The City of Vancouver installed a pilot last year, but have run into problems and have asked via their provincial government for the federal government to help with next steps. But I can assure all Davenport residents that there is no proposal before our federal government from the City of Toronto about a pilot to legalise all drugs. The federal Conservatives are deciding to disinform parliament and the public on this topic to score political points.
I was very sad to learn that my colleague Pam Damoff is not putting her name forward to run again in the 2025 federal election. She was very clear: she does not feel safe. The misogyny, threats and bullying in politics were not anything that she was willing to put up with anymore in her life.
Over one million seniors have successfully applied to the Canadian Dental Care Plan and will be covered for services as of this month. As well, seniors aged 65 and above can now apply to the CDCP online, a new user-friendly tool designed to help Canadians easily apply. There are more than 6,500 oral health care providers signed up to participate and ready to provide services to CDCP patients. If those eligible for services do not already have an oral health provider, they can consult Sun Life’s CDCP Provider Search to find a dentist, dental hygienist, denturist or dental specialist in their community.
Happy Cinco de Mayo to those who celebrate!Have a wonderful weekend, Davenport — as always, it is a true honour and pleasure to serve you.
My very best regards,
Julie Dzerowicz
