Davenport friends and neighbours!
Last night was truly special. Together with 12 other amazing parliamentarians, I had the honour of hosting Latin American & Hispanic Day on the Hill – an evening dedicated to celebrating the incredible contributions of Latino and Hispanic-Canadians to our country. Over 600 people joined us for what was a vibrant and meaningful celebration of culture, community, and connection.
I had extended an invitation to Prime Minister Carney to join us. While he was unable to attend, his absence speaks to the intense focus he has brought to strengthening Canada’s economy during this critical time. As he has stated, our government is working urgently to build the strongest economy in the G7 Prime Minister Carney launches new measures to protect, build, and transform Canadian strategic industries | Prime Minister of Canada – and that requires his full attention on trade diversification, budget preparation, and protecting Canadian jobs and sovereignty.
We were fortunate to have three exceptional ministers join us instead: the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Minister of Finance, and the Minister of Sport. Each spoke powerfully to the crowd about Canada’s deep ties with Latin America and the tremendous economic opportunities that exist between our nations as we diversify our trade relationships.
The Prime Minister’s schedule reflects the moment we’re in. With global uncertainty and ongoing trade challenges, our government is moving with urgency to transform our economy from reliance to resilience – diversifying our trade beyond the United States, removing interprovincial barriers, and fast-tracking nation-building infrastructure projects. He has been travelling extensively to strengthen relationships with international partners and has appointed John Hannaford as Canada’s representative to the European Union to accelerate progress on both economic and defence priorities.
Behind the scenes, intensive work continues with the United States to eliminate tariffs on Canadian aluminum, steel, auto, and forest products. While this may not always make headlines, it remains a top priority for our government as we fight to protect Canadian workers and businesses. Prime Minister Carney will be heading to Washington next week to discuss tariffs (including the new ones) with President Trump.
In Parliament, we introduced Bill C-11 – the Military Justice System Modernization Act. This important legislation will reform the National Defence Act to strengthen independence in our military justice system, shift sexual offence cases to civilian courts, expand judicial eligibility and victim supports, and align sex offender provisions with the Criminal Code.
Our federal government also announced a new Defence Investment Agency that will serve as an anchor in Canada’s defence industry. Under the leadership of Doug Guzman, the agency will provide the defence sector with greater clarity and certainty, remove red tape, and manage major purchases and delivery of military equipment.
On the Canada Post front, while their members remain on strike, they continue to deliver social assistance cheques to seniors and others who depend on them. For service updates, kindly click here.
Closer to home, I had the exciting opportunity to visit what will become, when completed, the largest privately developed life sciences building in Canada. The building, called Catalyst and developed by Seeker Labs, has an ambitious vision: to create a world-class life sciences hub right here in Davenport! It was inspiring to see this kind of innovation and investment taking root in our community.
At the end of Gender Equity Week, I was delighted to join a networking event with an incredible group of local female entrepreneurs and small business owners at the Button Factory on Geary Ave. The energy in that room was electric – hearing about their businesses, their challenges, and their dreams for the future reminded me why supporting our local entrepreneurs matters so much.
This week, we observed the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. It was a deeply meaningful day, with events continuing throughout the week, including this Saturday’s PowWow at Dufferin Grove Park, hosted by Native Child and Family Services. I look forward to seeing many of you at this important annual community gathering.
On October 15, Toronto Pearson will be hosting a Career Expo at the International Centre (6900 Airport Road, Mississauga, ON) from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. For those looking for jobs, this a great opportunity to network and learn about the wide range of career opportunities available at Pearson.
