Davenport friends and neighbours,
I hope you all had a wonderful summer! This was the first summer in my almost 7 years of service to Davenport, that I was able to truly be present in the riding and to take a few days off. It was marvelous to see so many of you at the many street festivals and events across the riding. Thank you for making it a point to say hello.
We live in an incredible period of time. So much is happening.
After 70 years of service, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II passed away at the age of 96. What an amazing example of leadership in service of others. She is a true inspiration!
By now you (i.e. Davenport residents) should have received my communications piece about the Davenport Platinum Jubilee Leadership Awards – in your mailbox. This is a wonderful chance to recognize and honour Davenport leaders, organizations and companies for their extraordinary contributions. You have until September 30th to nominate so please do not delay!
My latest householder is also out, entitled Delivering for Davenport – it is my way of showing how the Davenport riding and the many communities that it contains have improved over the last almost 7 years since I have had the privilege to serve as your Member of Parliament.
It’s been a while since we produced our last Davenport Federal Weekly update – so this one is longer than usual; the funding and resources section has been deleted until we can obtain the most up-to-date information.
There is a lot to update you on, including: Canada’s first Indigenous person was nominated to the Supreme Court; Health Minister appointed a Chief Nursing Officer for Canada; Canada’s first Federal 2SLGBTQI+ Action Plan has also been introduced by Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Youth, Marci Ien. Entitled Federal 2SLGBTQI+ Action Plan… Building our future, with pride; the plan is a whole-of-government approach to achieve a future where everyone in Canada is truly free to be who they are and love who they love. There are also a lot more actions to tackle climate change, labour shortages, more support for Ukraine, new support for Pakistan, and so much more. Please carefully review the links below for more information! I promise you will not be disappointed.
Earlier this week, Prime Minister Trudeau announced a series of “cost-of-living” supports for our most vulnerable and those living at the lower end of the income scale. Our federal government is taking a balanced approach: helping those most in need to deal with the rising costs of living, while minimizing federal government spending so that we do not trigger more inflation.
The House of Commons will be back in session next Tuesday September 20. I returned on Wednesday this week from our Summer National Caucus meeting to discuss our plan for the upcoming year. I look forward to updating you with more details as we move forward on plan implementation.
This weekend – is a big one! I will be Portuguese dancing in what we hope will be the largest Portuguese Folk Dance in the world; then I will be marching in the Ukrainian Solidarity Parade ending at the Bloor West Festival, popping over to say hi to St. Agnes and her event for 300 kids and community; then capping off the evening watching my first TIFF movie in years, ending the night at the West End Phoenix Saturday Night Phoever concert!!! Phew!!! Sunday is a day of meetings and preparation for Ottawa.
Finally, Happy Mexican Independence Day! As a Mexican-Canadian, I am proud of the contributions of the community to our nation; we are a stronger and better country as a result.
Enjoy the weekend Davenport friends and neighbours! As always, it’s a true honour and pleasure to serve you.
My very best,
Julie Dzerowicz
Member of Parliament, Davenport
