Davenport friends & neighbours,

The House is back in session. The words I would use to describe the current state of our federal government are focused and determined.

As PM Carney has said “The character of our government will be revealed by our focus and our delivery.  We are all here to get big things done for Canadians at a scale and pace that hasn’t happened for generations.”

On the Hill: Legislation
So this first week we are focused on Bill C-2 Strong Borders Act – it is a bill that provides more tools to border officials and police at all levels to better secure our border, combat transnational organised crime and fentanyl and disrupt illicit financing.   It also includes a number of changes to our immigration system – aimed at restoring integrity to the system, and giving the Minister of Immigration powers to  make changes in the event of an emergency, such as a pandemic.  See my speech on C-2.

Due to the Federal / Superior Court decision, our government is also racing against time to ensure constitutional compliance for “lost Canadians” via Bill C-3: An Act to amend the Citizenship Act.

Hot off the presses and great news for many Davenport residents who have been advocating for more aggressive hate law protections and an expanded “bubble legislation across Canada. Canada’s Justice Minister introduced the bill earlier today that would make it a criminal offence to wilfully promote hate through the use of hate symbols. The bill “would also create new crimes of obstruction and intimidation aimed at protecting places of worship and institutions — including schools, daycares and seniors’ residences — used by an identifiable group.”

As the only Mexican Canadian MP, I rose in the House to mark the 215 Anniversary of Mexican Independence;  and I asked the Min. of International Trade a question on diversification of trade to Latin America, given the prominence of Brazilian in our Davenport constituency.   PM Carney was in Mexico for 24 hours and lots got done – with Mexico and Canada agreeing to significantly increase bilateral trade.

We launched a study to look into the “unpaid work” allegations in Canada’s airline sector – as our Minister of Jobs said, “Nobody should work for free in this country.”  We expect a report by the beginning of December 2025.

Canada Strong
Affordability is top of mind for our government of course, and we are determined to be helpful.  Build Canada Homes was launched last week; it’s a new federal agency with a mandate to supercharge the delivery of homes across Canada, that are affordable on federal lands, using Canadian materials (lumber, steel, aluminum) and creating good paying jobs!  Very excited and proud that Davenport’s own Ana Bailão is the new CEO.

US tariffs and President Trump’s transformation of all of the US’s trading relationships has caused a rupture in the global economy. Our goal as a government is to empower Canadians by building Canada’s economic strength.  This is not a catchy phrase – it’s our core mission that guides our decisions – such as the focus on nation building projects,  the massive commitment to increasing our defence spending.

The Bank of Canada, has lowered interest rates to 2.5%; our economy is weaker due to trade tensions and the costs and uncertainty of US tariffs.  The governor is worried about the ongoing impact to our jobs, consumer confidence, and business investment.

Canada’s Interprovincial trade minister has announced it will launch public consultations on CUSMA ahead of the planned review of the trade pact set to begin early next year.  We want to hear from provincial, business leaders and a wide cross section of Canadian leaders on how we should approach the review conversations with the United States and with Mexico.

Our federal government has restarted conversations and an overall reset with China – I suspect as the US pulls away, many countries will be forced to look to other countries to do trade that is mutually beneficial – China is key, especially as it has imposed a number of tariffs that are impacting our agricultural sector.

Middle East
It’s hard to keep following what every week seems to be a situation that gets worse and worse.  It’s awful; it’s heartbreaking; and it’s frustrating.  Canada is limited as to what it can do – but it never stops to do all we can on the humanitarian side, in calling out when we see something that is wrong, and in being a leader in the promotion of a two-state solution.

Our PM has put out a statement on the Israeli government’s decision to further escalate the conflict in Gaza.

As our PM has said “Preserving the prospects for peace and stability in the region must be our collective priority. Canada urges all parties to negotiate in good faith toward a just, meaningful, and lasting peace that respects the dignity, security, and aspirations of all Palestinians and Israelis.”  As such, our PM and our Foreign Minister will be heading to the UN next week to recognise Palestinian statehood.

That is a wrap for this week! I can’t believe this is only our first week.  We are moving fast, we are decisive, we are focused and determined to protect Canadians and transition our economy into the strongest one in the G7.

Know that this update is only a partial summary of all that is going on in Ottawa!  Below is my MP report and a list of other federal announcements to be aware of.  Truly there is so much going on, to stay up to date and in the moment, kindly consider following me on  social media – @juliedzerowicz (Facebook, X, Instagram); @juliedzerowiczMP (YouTube).

As always, it is a true honour and pleasure to serve you Davenport!

With gratitude and warm regards,
