Davenport Friends and Neighbours,

MP Julie Dzerowicz is unable to join us for the weekly update. She will be away for a week, and in the meantime, her trusty staff (us) will be providing you with the letter this week.

Let us begin!

It is no secret that the Spring season has been quite an odd one. The sun has been deceiving, and the temperatures are warming at painfully slow levels. We hope you are staying warm (but not overly warm), and I’m sure we’re all eagerly awaiting summer days ahead.

Census 2026: This year’s census is due May 12 – Households that have received a census invitation letter in the mail with a Secure Access Code can complete it online today at census.gc.ca.

We have received many calls to our office asking us if there’s an alternate method of submission  than online — there is! Call this number – 1-833-663-2026 – have your access code ready and you’ll be able to request a paper copy.

Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport: Since March, MP Julie has been in regular communication with our community on the latest updates regarding Billy Bishop; you may have seen one of her letters on her social media, in various news outlets, and in previous editions of the newsletter. To find the latest communication piece on this topic (and previous communications), we have compiled them together and made it easy for you to find, right here on our website!

Our 31st Governor General: His Majesty King Charles III has approved the appointment of the Honourable Louise Arbour as the next Governor General of Canada. A world-renowned legal scholar, judge, a Companion of the Order of Canada and a leader in human rights and justice, Arbour has held nearly every office a Canadian jurist can hold — and several that no Canadian had held before. She has served as a justice on the Supreme Court of Canada, as Chief Prosecutor for the International Criminal Tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda, and as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

It truly is a moment of pride for Canada to have such an accomplished person step into this role. As Prime Minister Carney said at the announcement:

“Louise Arbour will represent the best of Canada to our citizens and to the world — a Canada clear-eyed about the challenges we face, and steadfast in the values we uphold. A Canada that is not just strong, but good. A Canada that is not just prosperous, but fair.”

Strengthening  Trade with Europe: On Monday, our Prime Minister concluded the 8th European Political Community Summit in Yerevan, marking the first time a non-European leader joined the Summit. Over the past year, our relationship with Europe has been strengthened more than ever before, and at a time where global trade relationships are diverging, Canada is leading and diversifying. At the Summit, our Prime Minister also reinforced Canada’s ongoing support for Ukraine with a contribution of $270 million.

Did You Know: In the past year, we have signed 20 new economic and defence partnerships, secured nearly $100 billion in foreign investment commitments, and diversified our trade partnerships across Europe and the Indo-Pacific.

Funding Announcement on Red Dress Day:  Our government has been supporting a Red Dress Alert pilot to better notify the public when an Indigenous woman, girl, or 2SLGBTQI+ person goes missing. This will help locate individuals faster and bring them home safely. To advance the implementation of the pilot, our federal government has allocated $300,000 in funding.

We would also like to point you all to a national, toll-free 24/7 crisis call line that provides trauma-informed support for anyone who requires emotional assistance related to missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ people. For assistance, call 1-844-413-6649.

Immigration Committee: MP Julie, as Chair of the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration, has wrapped up a study on Canada’s immigration system and how we can improve our immigration system moving forward.

The Committee heard from Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab, who answered questions about the Auditor General Report on how we can combat fraud in the international student program.

Report from Ottawa: MP Julie had many meetings in Ottawa this week, and we encourage you to check out the MP Report below to take a look!

Those are some of the highlights of a very busy week. As a reminder to all, Sunday is Mother’s Day (if you forgot, we’re glad we could remind you!). To all the moms in Davenport — the new moms figuring it out day by day, the single moms managing so much, the grandmothers who hold our families together — thank you. You are loved, today and every day.

As always, have a great and safe weekend, Davenport.

All our very best,

Team of Julie Dzerowicz
