Hello Davenport friends and neighbours! / Bonjour chers amis et voisins de Davenport!

MP Julie Dzerowicz is away, so she’ll be unable to join us for the weekly update. In the meantime, her trusty staff (us) will be providing you with the letter for one more week.

Let us begin!

Census 2026

Households should have received the 2026 Census in their mail (see picture above).

Census data is essential for planning government funding allocated towards infrastructure, schools, hospitals, and emergency services in our community. This data helps the government make sure resources go where Canadians actually need them. As such, filling out census data has an impact on everyone in Davenport—your family, neighbours, friends. If you haven’t filled it out yet, we urge you to do so.

You can complete it online today at census.gc.ca.

For those wondering if there is an alternate method of submission other than online, there is! Call this number – 1-833-663-2026 – have your access code ready, and you’ll be able to request a paper copy.

Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport

Over the past few weeks, our office has received a number of emails and phone calls regarding the provincial government’s proposed legislation to expand Billy Bishop airport. MP Dzerowicz has spoken about this subject a number of times. (see her responses here).

We would like to mention how thankful we are for your communication—emails and calls. Your voices are being heard. We are listening. We have been compiling your comments, understanding them, and next week MP Julie will be directly addressing them.

This is on the top of mind for our office, and even more for MP Julie.

Supporting Ukraine

Our Minister of Foreign Affairs, Anita Anand, has announced additional sanctions in response to Russia’s violations against Ukrainian children.

These actions by Russia are devastating and heartbreaking. Our government calls on the Russian authorities to immediately return Ukrainian children to their communities and comply with its international legal obligations. The return of these children is both a humanitarian imperative and a central element to achieving a just and sustainable peace in Ukraine.

MP Julie has always been clear: we will continue fighting for democracy, and we will continue to support Ukraine.

For the Minister’s news release, see here.

National Electricity Strategy:

Our government recently announced a new National Electricity Strategy. This plan will double the capacity of our grid by 2050 and supply clean, reliable, affordable power across the country for decades to come.

To develop this strategy, our federal government is launching consultations with provinces, territories, Indigenous Peoples, utilities, and unions. Over the next few months, together they will identify the actions needed to double our grid most effectively and affordably. It could deliver up to $15 billion in total energy savings by 2050 and lower total energy costs for 7 in 10 Canadian households.

The strategy is driven by four pillars:

  1. Build the infrastructure needed to double Canada’s electricity generation
  2. Connect Canada’s fragmented grids East-West-North through new and expanded transmission lines
  3. Train, attract, and retain the talent needed to build the grid of the future
  4. Make more of the technologies and components powering our grid here at home

Artemis || Crew Comes to Ottawa

Prime Minister Mark Carney welcomed the Artemis II astronauts to Ottawa on Wednesday telling them their recent trip around the moon has served as an inspiration for the whole country.

“Its a big big lesson, I think, for all Canadians of what teamwork does, what dedication does, what courage does, what human ingenuity is capable of and that it’s just the beginning,” said PM Carney.

Watching the Artemis II crew make history is a reminder of what we’re capable of. It gives us a chance to look at the earth  from a new perspective. Our planet—a small, borderless, living “spaceship” in a vast universe. How blessed we are to call it home.

Long Weekend Ahead

Did you know:

Victoria Day is Canada’s oldest statutory holiday. May 24 was first declared a holiday by the legislature of the Province of Canada in 1845 to celebrate Queen Victoria’s birthday.

That is all for this week! The weather is finally beautiful today and thankfully, there’s a great forecast for this long weekend, so enjoy and drive safely if you’re on the road.

As always, have a wonderful Victoria Day weekend, Davenport.

All our very best,

Team of Julie Dzerowicz
