Davenport friends and neighbours!
Prime Minister Carney was at the UN earlier this week, and in one of his press conferences he quoted a line from Leonard Cohen’s song “Anthem”: “There is a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in.”
He told the media that in every moment where there’s a crack, where there’s a rupture, there is possibility — and it’s our responsibility, it’s our opportunity as Canada in this moment to find it. And after his visit to the United Nations General Assembly, he assured Canadians that there is light, there are many possibilities.
There is a rupture in the global trading system and our international rules-based order — largely due to how President Trump is negotiating trade deals around the world and the rise and cooperation of authoritarian powers.
But as PM Carney has said: the character of our government will be revealed by our focus and our delivery. We are all here to get big things done for Canadians at a scale and pace that hasn’t happened for generations.
We have made lots of changes but the change is only just beginning. We are working fast and getting things done at a pace and focus that the moment we are living in requires. On the national front, this week there were lots of changes. Here are some of the big ones:
Canada Post Many may not know this but I am the daughter of a Canada Post worker; my dad worked at Canada Post for almost 30 years.
Sadly since 2018, Canada Post has accumulated more than $5 billion in losses. Canada Post is broke. Every day the federal government provides $10 million to the crown corporation to keep it afloat.
This is not responsible nor is it sustainable. So we are taking action. We are following Judge Kaplan’s recommendations on how to ensure Canada Post continues to be a viable company moving forward. So we had to make changes to save it.
Key changes include:
- 75% of all Canadians get their mail via a community box; we are now going to implement this for the last 25%.
- We are going to move more mail by land instead of air — this will lengthen the time for letter delivery from 2-4 days to 3-7 days.
- We will lift the moratorium on closing rural postal stations put in place in 1994. Many former rural areas are now suburban or urban and they are over-served.
- We’re also giving Canada Post 45 days to come up with a plan on how to reduce costs. We are doing this at the federal level across government, and they will have to do the same.
Introducing a law to combat hate and protect places of worship Our Attorney General introduced Bill C-9 in the House of Commons last Friday. Rising antisemitism, Islamophobia, homophobia and transphobia have left too many Canadians feeling unsafe in their own communities. So we introduced the Combatting Hate Act (C-9) to better protect access to places of worship, as well as schools, community centres and other specified places, and to more clearly address and denounce hate-motivated crime.
Getting guns off our streets This week the Minister of Public Safety introduced the Assault-Style Firearms Compensation Program.
As part of our federal government’s long-standing commitment to tackling gun violence in Canadian communities, we banned more than 2,500 makes and models of assault-style firearms since May 2020.
The Compensation Program was developed to provide compensation for eligible businesses and individuals who own these prohibited firearms and devices and participate in the program. This is not about hunters who need guns for their livelihoods — this is about guns that can only be used to kill. The RCMP helped our government come up with the list.
State of Palestine: On the international front, at the UN this week Canada recognized the State of Palestine, if they meet certain conditions. Please read the whole statement. It is very important to read it whole to understand our reasoning.
Joining other countries such as France, UK, Australia, Portugal, Canada offers our partnership in “building the promise of a peaceful future for both the State of Palestine and the State of Israel.” Since 1947, successive Canadian governments have supported a two-state solution as a way for ongoing peace in the Middle East.
Redirecting our trade away from the USA Canada signed a deal with Indonesia — our first ever bilateral trade agreement with an ASEAN country! With Indonesia’s market projected to become a top five global economy by 2050, these partnerships will unlock significant potential for Canadian workers, businesses, and investors. Canada and Indonesia also signed a new Defence Cooperation Agreement.
As well, Prime Minister Mark Carney is currently in London to meet with the leaders of the United Kingdom, Australia, Spain and Iceland to discuss trade and security.
I’ll end on an amazing local note… Geary Ave. in our constituency of Davenport has been recognized as one of the Coolest Neighbourhoods in the World for 2025 by Time Out magazine! How fantastic is that?
